Today marks two years since our arrival in Denmark. In case I haven’t made it obvious through various postings, I should just state in no uncertain terms…we love living here. Although we have never thought of Denmark as a forever-place (and still don’t), it is difficult to think about not living here. Not biking everywhere. Not navigating our way through the guttural Danish language. Not feeling the degree of safety we feel here.

But it’s not perfect. I’m sure there isn’t a place in the world that is. We live in a bit of an expat bubble…which is to be expected when moving to a place where a different language comes into play, and your kids attend an international school. Although it can be extremely enjoyable to be united with such like-minded people, it hinders the ability to become fully integrated in the society you live in. Plus, all good things come at a price and this city is obscenely expensive! Not owning a car here is a catch 22. Biking everywhere is physically and mentally good for us and we love it (most of the time). Yet, trying to get to a strawberry farm by public transportation (for example, like we did yesterday), might just mean that you end up at a Viking museum instead (long story).

So, didn’t we say we’d move here for a minimum of two years? For our friends and family who keep asking…we do not know how much longer we will be here. That is what “year two” does – it raises questions.

If we allow our unknown future plans to get the best of us, we might miss out on what is right in front of us. So for today, we are continuing to enjoy a place that is still very new. The past few weeks we have visited new places and also some old favorites. Thank you Mother Nature, for providing us with what, so far, has been great summer weather. It was a long and difficult winter, so we deserve it!

Last weekend we biked out to Charlottenlund Fort and beach…

With a detour to Dyrehavsbakken, which first opened in 1583 (!) making it the world’s oldest operating amusement park.

Reminiscing to the first few months of our arrival, I have an article which was featured on Your Expat Child this week – a great website resource for families living abroad. Pop on over and have a look!
