Where the Baltic and North Sea Meet (and Happy New Year!)

Skagen Denmark

Happy New Year! We recently returned from spending 3 weeks in Seattle for the holidays. Ringing in the New Year with family and being surrounded by our most loved – and those who love us most – was a gift I am so grateful for. The past year was wonderful, in so many ways. The girls are growing like fierce little weeds, stretching their roots to new lengths and discovering new talents. We managed to see more of the world – visiting some familiar favorites, like Italy, England and Barcelona, and discovered new places, like Croatia, Iceland and Skagen. How we managed to fit all that in, amidst a busy year of work, graduate school and primary school is a wonder, but I’m happy we were able to find that balance.

Fighting jetlag and getting back into the swing of our routine, coupled with the anticipation of what the new year will bring, has made for an exhilarating, yet rather exhausting start to 2014. If I’m being completely honest, I’m a bit scared about the next 4 months. I will be writing a thesis, which will involve traveling to Spain for an unknown length of time (probably not exceeding 3 weeks) and likely also working part-time. For one who does not thrive on the stress of a busy schedule (and nobody should, in my opinion) I am mustering up all my courage and strength to set deadlines for myself and push through until Spring. I am focusing on the positive – I get to research a field of work that I am passionate about, in a location I love, thanks to the love and support of my family.

So, I’ll leave you with this…an early apology for the neglect this blog will likely see over the next few months – and some more lovely photos from our wintery beach trip to Skagen. These were taken from the very northern tip of Jutland, here in Denmark, where you are able to have one foot in the Baltic Sea and one in the North Sea. We loved watching these two bodies of water join together, like a zipper connecting two different parts of the world. Plus, the sunset was spectacular.
