When my Mom was about 20, she worked for a Swedish firm, in Chile. This company is the reason she moved to London, where she met my Dad. She had plans to visit the firm’s headquarters in Stockholm, but life plans (such as getting married and moving to Honduras) prevented her from going. Although she had no regrets (of course) she held on to a dream of one day seeing Sweden’s capital city.
Stockholm is an hour flight from Copenhagen or 5 hours by train. We opted to fly, to maximize our time. Brett and I were in Stockholm about 9 years ago – a whirlwind stop in the middle of an epic journey. I remember my first impressions of a beautiful city, made up of islands brimming with colorful architecture. This trip reconfirmed those somewhat hazy memories.

We stayed at Hotel Zinkensdamm in Södermalm. It was just 3 metro stops from the historic Gamla Stan area – the original Stockholm, which was developed in the 1300’s. We tried to stroll through every inch of Gamla Stan, we toured the massive Royal Palace and all its museums, walked along the harbor area and enjoyed some great food – including a stop at the oldest confectionary in Stockholm.

On our last day, we explored Södermalm, which was one of those wonderful surprise outings. We visited a beautiful church, historic streets and stumbled upon this view…

We are nearing the end of my Mom’s month-long-stay with us. We have seen and done so much. She has been here as we navigate through changing schedules and changing seasons. I think it’s safe to say that summer has turned to fall here in Copenhagen. The days are (mostly) sunny, but quite brisk – especially the mornings.
I will be so sad to see my Mom leave next week, but we will move along into my favorite season, hoping it doesn’t pass us by too quickly.
