When we planned a trip to Skagen (pronounced Skane, by the way) I kept hearing people mention that “there is something about the light” there. I looked online and read the same thing here and here and here…but I still didn’t really get it. There is something pure and magical about the light, artists go there because of it and Danes go there to celebrate it. I was intrigued.
The other thing Skagen is known for is its beaches. We were going in November. We are getting rather good at this off-season-travel-thing, no? But we were mostly going for the quiet family time. We took games and puzzles and a lot of food! We expected bad weather, but Denmark never ceases to surprise us. It was quite cold (we expected that too) but clear and sunny.
And that pure and magical light? I get it now.
All that fresh air and magical light can make you tired and hungry. This is what I really came down here for. The recharge had begun.
Brett dubbed our meal “Danskgiving”, which is really very fitting. We had duck, Flæskesteg (Danish pork roast), yams & apple, mashed potatoes, green beans & fennel and cranberry sauce. I made the cranberry sauce. The rest of the credit goes to my wonderful husband. Oh, and we can’t forget my new favorite dessert…ris à l’amande – which transforms into pancakes in the morning.
A little more Skagen to come…
And yes, we finished that puzzle!
