Richmond of the North

Ah, the North Yorkshire countryside…so quaint, so beautiful…so wet. You can plan a summer holiday in England, but can’t plan for summer weather. When you have lived in Seattle, Copenhagen and London, this is something you get used to, and you learn to shrug it off. You learn to look for places that serve a hot meal, and wrapping your fingers around a warm cup of tea can be just as lovely and appreciated in July as in January. Most importantly, you learn to wear appropriate clothing to stay dry and happy.

Richmond North Yorkshire

We were on our way home from the Lake District and stopped in the old market town of Richmond (not to be confused with Richmond in London, close to where we live). This Richmond was founded in 1071, on land granted by William the Conqueror. The castle was completed in 1086, overlooks the River Swale and is now mostly in ruins.

The low clouds and fog might have limited our view of the Yorkshire countryside, but this town is a gem…in any weather.
