A Day in Innsbruck
This trip wasn’t about checking any new countries off our bucket list. Brett and I have spent time in Austria before (Vienna and Salzburg), and in fact, the girls had been to Austria before too. See this post full of Bavarian summer-time goodness, including our stay in Austria. We’ve been fortunate enough to have spent our fair share of time in Italy too, but we hadn’t ever visited these places in the wintertime or skied the slopes of the Dolomite mountains.
When weighing our options of the closest airports to the ski resort of Selva Val Gardena, Innsbruck appealed immediately because Brett and I had always wanted to go there. It’s the capital city of Tyrol (an Austrian county) and it’s nestled in the Nordkette mountains, near the Italian boarder.
Delightful Austrian Charm and Food
Our minimal grasp of Danish has made the German language slightly less foreign-sounding than it used to. Perhaps that, plus our German heritage, have helped us always feel at home in this part of Europe. Although, it could also be that we really like pretzels, strudel and dumplings.
Views from Stadtturm – The City Tower
Innsbruck was home to the 1976 Winter Olympic Games, so it was a lovely coincidence that the 2018 Winter Games began in Pyeongchang while we were there. If you climb the 148 steps of the Stadtturm (City Tower) you will catch a breathtaking view of Innsbruck and the surrounding mountains. It wasn’t a very clear day when I went up, but I could still see the spectacular snow-covered Bergisel ski jump.
Being a winter sports hot spot, we could have easily stayed in Innsbruck to ski, but the Dolomites were waiting for us. Not even 24 hours later, and it was time to say goodbye to Innsbruck and drive south, over the boarder into Italy.
To be continued…
